5 Ways To Prepare For Hardwood Flooring Installation

Installing new hardwood flooring is usually a one-time expense, since these floors can last a lifetime or longer. You want to make sure your investment goes in properly, so preparing for the installation in advance is a must. Your installer can perform many of these tasks, but you may need to request the service specifically.

1. Arrange Storage

Any rooms that are having flooring installed need to be completely emptied. This can overcrowd other parts of the home, making it difficult to live in the space during the installation period if you don't have a garage to use. Fortunately, you can have a storage pod delivered directly to your home. These secure and waterproof pods can be placed on your driveway so it's easy to move everything back and forth.

2. Repair Subflooring

The final look and function of the new hardwood floor will depend greatly on the state of the subflooring beneath. Any rotten plywood, low areas, or uplifted concrete must be repaired before the floorboards go in. This is usually considered an add-on service if it is performed by your installers, and some types of damage may require a special concrete foundation contractor. You can also make arrangements to repair the subflooring yourself, if you prefer.

3. Remove Trim and Doors

Baseboard trims must be removed before hardwood flooring is installed. Doors may also require removal, especially if they open inward into the room where installation is taking place. Removal of these items is nearly always included in the installation, but some homeowners prefer to perform these jobs themselves in exchange for a labor discount on the installation. You will also have to make arrangements on whether you or the installers replace the trim and doors after installation.

4. Seal Off Rooms

Installation will require some sanding, which means sawdust residue will be in the air. Sealing off the HVAC ducts in the room with plastic and hanging plastic sheet curtains in doorways can help contain the dust during work. Just make sure to turn off your HVAC unit while the vents are covered, or you can damage the system.

5. Clear Workspace

Your installers will need an outdoor area to set up a workstation for measuring and cutting floorboards. An ideal spot is a covered patio near an entrance to your home, but a spot in the yard or on the driveway can also work. Just make sure there is access to electrical outlets so that the installers can operate their tools.
