Should Your Bathroom Cabinets Match The Kitchen?
Upgrading or updating a bathroom is a great place to spend your remodeling dollars. But as you contemplate your renovation, the cabinetry you choose will go a long way toward crafting the right overall look.
So, what color should those cabinets be? Should they match your kitchen and/or other cabinetry in the house? Here are two times to consider matching and two to skip it entirely.
1. Match Cabinets to Sell
Are you thinking about putting the house on the market within the next five to ten years or so? Then approach this with a keen eye to what will appeal to future buyers. Cabinets in both the kitchen and bathrooms have huge impacts on their look. A coordinated, neutral style usually benefits both and makes your house look well-managed and maintained.
2. Match Nearby Cabinets
Distance matters. The closer two rooms or spaces are to each other, the more likely it is that you should try to blend them.
Certainly, adjoining rooms and those into which you can see at the same time need some amount of visual harmony. But you may want to blend all the rooms on one floor, especially in the public areas of the home used by visitors. But worrying about matching the first-floor kitchen and the basement bathroom? It's probably not a big deal.
3. Don't Match In Your Forever Home
Even though the average length of homeownership in the U.S. is just eight years, some homeowners plan to live in their homes forever. Whether you're older and view this as a retirement home or you want to raise your kids in your hometown, you don't need to spend much time prepping it for other owners.
This is a time, then, to express your personality and tastes. Have fun. Be bold. Try new things. Or don't. It's up to you, especially in en suite bathrooms.
4. Don't Match Wildly Uneven Spaces
Finally, remember that each room has its own needs, strengths, and weaknesses.
For instance, the kitchen may be airy and open, making dark base cabinets a welcome contrast. But a small, dark bathroom could feel claustrophobic and even smaller with the same dark shade. You might even need to forgo cabinets completely in an awkward bath. Put the needs of the room before aesthetic choices based on other parts of the house.
